Carl H. Bergelt

AGE: 84 • Morris Plains

Carl H. Bergelt, passed away the afternoon of Saturday, April 20, 2013 surrounded by friends, family and his loving wife Elfi.

Born in Hamburg Germany, he met the love of his life in a ballroom dance class in 1945 when he was just 17 and Elfi was 15. It was love at first sight, followed by a simple wedding ceremony in 1953. In early 1956 Carl immigrated to the US and was followed by Elfi and his young son Michael.

After working various jobs, he found a job working in his previous profession as an Optician in Morristown. Daughter Angela was born in 1958 and in 1959 the family moved to Mendham Township. Monica joined the family in 1967. The three children went through the public school system in Mendham where Carl enjoyed attending sporting events and school functions, as well as the annual Fourth of July and Labor day parades. While being a volunteer fireman and ascending to the fire chief position Carl marched in many of these parades.

On October 1st of 1973 Carl and his family were proud to open Bergelt Opticians which remains on Speedwell Avenue to the present day. Son Michael joined Carl full time in December of 1976 and they became a strong presence in Morris Plains where they worked together for 34 years.

Carl retired in January 2010 and has enjoyed his retirement playing keyboards and enjoying time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carl enjoyed the simple things in life, tinkering and maintaining his cars, playing music with his dear friends, swimming in the ocean, going to the auto races, watching fussball (soccer), and playing with his cats. Family members and friends always enjoyed his German sense of humor and wit. Family and friends will miss him.

Carl is survived by his wife Elfi, daughters Angela and Monica, son Michael and daughter-in-law Cindy, grandsons Sean Carraher and Adam Smith, great grand children Audrianna Carraher and Elianna Carraher, sister Ruth Heilmann, niece Brigitte and husband Dirk, and great nephews Ralph, Timo and Sandra and their spouses.
