Genevieve DeFiore

AGE: 94 • Morris Twp.

Genevieve (Mosso) DeFiore, 94, of Morris Township, NJ, passed away on April 23, 2014 at the home of her daughter in Matawan, NJ, holding hands with her family as she entered into eternal life. She had suffered a stroke a week earlier. Born Jennie P. Mosso on January 5, 1920 in Morristown, NJ to Francesco and Teresa (Petrone) Mosso, Genevieve lived there for many years and graduated from Bayley High School in 1936. She married the late Alphonse J. DeFiore in 1943 and they raised their family in Morris Township, NJ, where she lived for over 60 years. For the past five years, Genevieve has lived with her daughter and family in Matawan, NJ. After high school, Genevieve completed secretarial courses and worked for a real estate office for four years. She then took a three month temporary Civil Service position at the Morris County Clerk's Office that turned into 41 years of dedicated service. Genevieve worked her way up through the ranks via numerous administrative positions, took a variety of civil service exams, and worked in every department within the Morris County Clerk's office. In 1974, she was appointed Chief Clerk of Registry, remaining in that leadership position until her retirement in 1987. In this role, Genevieve oversaw a large staff whom she always encouraged to grow and learn. She had a strong belief in the promises and potential found within every individual, and she shared these principles with all who knew her.

A faithful and devoted Catholic, Genevieve was a lifelong member of St. Margaret's Church in Morristown. When her children were in school, she was involved in the Mother's Guild, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a member of the St. Gerard Society at St. Margaret's and served as its president for many years. Genevieve was very involved in her community, particularly after her retirement. She regularly volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Drives as well as with Special Olympics of Morris County. She was a well-known figure at election time, working at the polls for many years in her beloved Morris Township. She was an active member of the Morris Township Senior Citizens Club and served as their delegate to the Morris County Council of Older Persons Association. Genevieve enjoyed many trips with the seniors and participated in walks and events with them, including marching in the annual Morristown St. Patrick's Day parade. In earlier years, Genevieve enjoyed attending Republican political events with her husband Al, as well as being involved with the Elks Club of Boonton, NJ. She did extensive traveling throughout the U.S. and around the world, always with an adventurous spirit.

Genevieve was predeceased by her husband Alphonse, her baby daughter Lucille and her son Richard, as well as sister Mary Lunetta Mellini and brothers Carmen and Patrick Mosso. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann and son-in-law Laurence Blackburn of Matawan, NJ, grandchildren Laura Marie and Daniel Blackburn of Matawan, NJ, Arielle DeFiore of Canton, GA and Matthew DeFiore of Houston, Texas, as well as former daughter-in-law Linda DeFiore of Canton, GA.
