Joseph Patrick Gerrity of Pawleys Island, SC, formerly a 36 year resident of Florham Park, NJ died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013. He was born on February 3, 1931 in Newark, NJ, to the late Michael J. Gerrity and Mary Connell. Joe retired from the Newark Police Department as Lieutenant in 1993 after 38 years of service. He was an Army Veteran serving in Germany and France during the Occupation Forces in 1951-53. Joe was a member of the Superior Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police of Essex County and the NJ Retired Police & Firemen's Association. Joe will be remembered for his love of family and Irish heritage and was an avid reader especially of Irish literature. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He was fondly known as "Mr. Niceguy" by his colleagues.

A member of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church in Pawleys Island SC, he is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret "Della" Swansboro; daughter, Kathleen Genna and husband Thomas; two grandsons, Michael J. and Kevin T. Genna all of MD; son, Brian J. of FL; sisters, Mary Winter, Dolores Hayes, Florence Perry; brother, Matthew and his wife Rosemary and 19 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Julia Tobin, Alice Kalicki and brother, Michael J. Gerrity.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2pm at the Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. The family will be receiving visitors on Friday, Sept. 13, 7-9 pm at the Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield-Pawleys Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the in Joe's name or the Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church.
