Norman D. Leon, 83 of Haley Road in Kittery Point died on February 26, 2014 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Born in New York City on December 7, 1930 he was a son of the late Daniel and Marie Leon. He was educated at the University of New Hampshire and Rutgers University and worked as an engineer for AT&T from 1955 to 1989. He has made his home in New York City, Dover, NH, Randolph NJ and for many years he and his loving wife Phylis Leon have made Kittery Point their home. Norman proudly served his country as a member of both the United States Army and Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was very active in veteran's organizations. He served as the Commander of the Kittery/Eliot VFW Post 9394 and as a member of the Marine Corps League for many years. He worked tirelessly on monuments to Civil War Veterans and the Vietnam and Korea Memorials in Kittery, he organized the Kittery Memorial Day parade each year and worked with the local scouts to ensure each veteran's grave was marked with a flag. He was a great ambassador for the Wreaths Across America each year as the caravan stopped in Kittery. He was a supporter of the Salvation Army and a communicant of St. Raphael's Church in Kittery.
He was also very active in his community as a coach of many recreational youth sports during his time in Randolph NJ and served as the Regional Vice President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in New Hampshire. He enjoyed membership in Kiwanis, the Jaycees and supported the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Kittery Zoning Board of Appeals.
Norman is survived by his loving wife Phylis Leon, children; Gail and Charles Sweeney, Dan Leon and Trish Hasegawa, Brenda Leon and Patrick Bambrick, Diane and Eric Bonin, Norman and Lee Leon, twelve grand and seven great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday March 4, 2014 at 11am in St. Raphael's Church on Whipple Road in Kittery. Friends may visit with Norman's family on Monday from 4-6pm in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, where VFW services will be held at 6pm. Family flowers only, donations may be made in his memory to VFW Post 9394 or the Disabled American Veterans. Care for the Leon family is entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
