Stephanie Deats Dorward died peacefully with her family at her bedside on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Stephanie was born to the late Frank Deats and Elizabeth Deats Dwyer on November 3, 1953. Stephanie graduated from Morris Plains Borough School and Morristown High School where she served as a Cheerleader. She went on to Marietta College in Ohio where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. To further her skills, she transferred to Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. After moving to Kansas City, Missouri, she earned a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Missouri. Stephanie began teaching Spanish at Park Hill High School in Kansas City, Missouri.
During her time at Park Hill, she coordinated and led fourteen student group visits to Spain, France and Italy, working to ensure her students foreign language studies were enriched with firsthand experience of the European culture and geography. She later became Chair of the Spanish Department and Coordinator of the A+ Program. Stephanie was an active member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where she played hand bells and participated in the Prayer Shawl Ministry for many years. She ran in numerous marathons in support of cancer research charities and completed a sixty mile walk in two days. During her last year of life, Stephanie was determined to finish her duties as a teacher and successfully completed the school year while undergoing treatment which included heavy medications. When Stephanie walked into a room, her presence and smile visibly changed those present and the mood of the room became instantly lightened and energized.
Stephanie is survived by two daughters, Lauren Dorward and Sarah Alexander and her husband, Brian; and their two month old daughter, Olivia; a sister, Jody Deats Varty and her husband, Ed and mother, Bette Deats Dwyer of Morristown.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 10:00AM at the Church of the Assumption, Morristown, NJ. In remembrance of Stephanie, donations may be made to the
