Ernest M. Long, Ph.D., of Cushing passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at the age of 78 following a brief illness. Dr. Long was born in Spring City, Tenn. to Burt and Polly Long. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret F. Long. Dr. Long earned a doctorate in quantitative genetics from Texas A&M University where he also served as professor and state forester for the Texas Forest Service. His professional career also included work for International Paper as well as consulting for a multinational reforestation project. Survivors include his daughters, Nancy Tindall of New Braunfles, and Kathy Murphy and husband, Timothy, of The Woodlands; grandsons, Justin and Hayden Tindall; granddaughters, Kaitlin and Nicole Murphy; and constant companions, Jess and Girl Dog. A celebration of Ernest’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at the 7th Street Cafe, 754 7th Street, Cushing, Texas.
