Mr. Mike Burns, 59, of Lufkin passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013. He was born in Tatum, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, A.B. Burns and Leo and Helen Downs, and special uncle, Sherman Smith. Mike is survived by his wife, Shawn Burns; his children and their spouses, Ericka and John Stewart, and Micah Shaye Burns Fike, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Bryson and Jocelyn Stewart, and Kylie and Peyton Fike; brother, Rodney Henderson and wife Amy; sisters, Leah Osburn and Patrician Seimears; aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a special aunt, Shirley Smith; and dear cousins, Kim and Pam Smith, and Marc and Kip Amick. Two dearest loves of his life were his music, which he dedicated to his church and the many students he taught through the years. But his greatest joy was loving his four grandchildren. Not only did God give Mike the gift of music at the early age of three, but also the gift to spread that joy to a multitude of students. Mike changed the course of many young lives with these special God given gifts. Mike graduated from Tatum High School and received his bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He then received his double masters from the University of Texas. Many of his students were accomplished at UIL solo and ensemble, all region, and state music competitions as well as several Sweepstakes Band awards. One of the things Mike was most proud of was the outstanding performances of his twirlers, flag and drill teams. He was a sought after judge for athletic twirling competitions across the state of Texas. Mike believed in supporting all aspects of the school system, whether it be athletics, academics, school programs and character building, along with drawing the community and parental support for the school to thrive. Mike was a wonderful, funny man with a gentle disposition, while his life centered around family, church and school. After leaving Tatum, he made Lufkin his home, becoming more actively involved in his church. He was involved in two music groups: "Moving On" from Tatum, and "Crimson," a gospel quartet in Lufkin. Growing up in Tatum, Mike developed a love for horses, becoming quite a horseman. Later, his hobbies included gardening as long as there were NO snakes. Pallbearers will be Trever Strong, Tyson Strong, Cameron Henderson, Wes Osburn, Truman Davis Sr., Zack Watson, Wayne Bynum and Byron Haden. Honorary pallbearers will be Truman Davis Jr., Joe Brass, Paul Whinery and Brandon Bozeman. Mike left this world as he lived it â€" peacefully. While not a rich man, he was rich with love, friendship and God's music. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Tatum United Methodist Church in Tatum with Pastor John Harvey and Pastor Shannon Hahn officiating. Burial will follow at Harris Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. A local visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches. Laird Funeral Home.
