Patsy Moore Speer, 84, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, in Victoria. She was born to Velma and Clifford Moore on May 20, 1930, in Houston. Pat grew up in Nacogdoches and Mount Pleasant. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in the class of 1948, and she attended the University of Texas at Austin as a member of the class of 1952. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Pat and James Speer were married on Aug. 30, 1958, and together they raised her two children from a former marriage. Her professional life was varied and challenging, but whether it was moving an entire pharmacy across Houston or counseling a homesick graduate student, she brought conscientiousness, intelligence, ingenuity and good humor to every occupation. Pat loved her family, her dogs and the natural world. She was an avid birder, an eager collector of brass rubbings from English churches and a very capable bridge player. She read constantly and was an enthusiastic amateur historian and literary critic. She was proud of both her Irish heritage and her Native American lineage, and combined a mischievous Irish sense of humor with the depth and wisdom of a Native American old soul. One old, dear friend said of her recently that she was “… the funniest and most honest person I have ever known.†Pat warmed the hearts and brightened the lives of countless people, and this planet will be a duller and less welcoming place without her. Pat is survived by her husband, Dr. James Speer; her daughter, Hillary Dunshee of Alpine; her son, Brookes Henderson, of Rockport; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at the Old North Church on Highway 59 just north of Nacogdoches. Pat would have much preferred donations to the Alzheimer’s Society instead of flowers. Victoria Mortuary & Cremation.
