Bert Devers Obituary
Devers, Bert Bert Devers, 97, departed this life peacefully on November 6, 2012 at home in Dallas, Texas. Bert was born February 11, 1915 in Clay County, Texas, the youngest of three sons. He graduated from Henrietta High School. As a young man, Bert developed an appreciation for country music, rodeos and western culture. He worked at North American, an aircraft manufacture in Grand Prairie, Texas during World War II and served in the United States Marine Corps. Bert became an entrepreneur early in life investing in residential real estate, which is something he pursued much of his life as an investor and landlord. Bert married Christa Amelie Von Jena in 1948 to whom he was married for fifty-four years. They moved from Wichita Falls, Texas to Dallas in 1953. Bert loved to build and repair things. He could fix almost anything. Bert single-handedly built several houses throughout his life, including the one his family lived in for the last forty-seven years. Bert's greatest accomplishment in life happened after he began attending the Dallas County Cowboy Church in Balch Springs, TX. At the age of 94, having never been to church in his life, Bert made a profession of faith and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. This was a result of many years of prayers by family and friends and a testimony to the power of prayer. The Holy Spirit softened Bert's stony heart and changed his life forever. Two broken hips postponed his baptism for two years but in October 2011 church elders and lay pastors lifted the old cowboy into a horse trough. Bert was known as the official "Sheriff" of the cowboy church. The family would like to thank Debbie Denman and WFAA Channel 8 News for the excellent story they aired covering this event. We would also like to thank all the members of the Dallas County Cowboy Church for the love and encouragement shown Bert and his family over the last four years. And finally we give God all the Glory and remind others to "never give up." Continue to pray for your loved ones because God hears our prayers and He answers our prayers. God is never late. He is always on time. Our family can testify to that as Bert mounts up and rides off for that last round up in the sky. Bert was preceded in death by his wife Christa in 2002. Survivors include his son, Gary Devers; a daughter Sandra Polster and husband Tom, three granddaughters: LeeAnn Polster, Lori Martin, Kari Neeley and husband Greg and four great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be Saturday November 10, 2012 at Dallas County Cowboy Church in Balch Springs, Texas followed by burial at Crestview Memorial Park in Wichita Falls, Texas. The family will receive friends 6-8p.m. Friday at Grove Hill Funeral Home.
