Benner, Frederick "Fred" Gerhardt June 28, 1925 March 29, 2014 Frederick "Fred" Gerhardt Benner, 88, of Coppell, Texas, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Las Colinas Medical Center, Irving, Texas. Fred was born June 28,1925 in Chicago, Illinois, to Frederick and Maria (Follmann) Benner. He graduated from high school in 1943 and joined the Army where he served in the Army Air Corps as a B29 bombardier. He was based in the Mariana Islands and flew bombing missions over the Japanese home islands until the end of the war. Following his honorable separation from active duty, Fred returned to Chicago and enrolled at Bradley University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. He subsequently earned a second Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Most of Fred's life-long career as a professional engineer was spent in Chicago and Milwaukee designing and constructing railroad facilities. His proudest accomplishments were related to the railroad. Fred married Elvira Wurch on November 24, 1971 in St. Charles, Minnesota. They were married for 37 years. No one cared for his wife better than Fred. He is preceded in death by his parents and by his wife Elvie. He is survived by many nephews and nieces. Fred had been a resident of St Joseph's Retirement Community in Coppell, Texas for the past 13 years where he is remembered for his sharp mind and interest in current events as well as all things mechanical. He leaves behind many friends who will miss him terribly. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday April 1, 2014 at St. Joseph's Retirement Community. Graveside services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lewiston, Minnesota, where Fred will be buried with his wife Elvie.
