Obituary Condolences

Berger, Dr. Israel Dr. Israel Rueben Berger, age 94, passed away on October 20, 2013, surrounded by family and loving friends in the home of his son, Michael Berger. Dr. Berger grew up in Lincolnton, Georgia, was admitted to the University of Georgia at the age of 15, and graduated from Augusta Medical College in 1943. After serving as a U.S. Navy physician in World War II and seeing battle in the Pacific, he settled in Athens and practiced radiology for the Athens, Commerce, and surrounding areas until his retirement in 1976. Dr. Berger was an active member of the Congregation Children of Israel Temple, in Athens, Georgia, and served as Temple President for several terms. He was a generous contributor to the local Athens-area hospitals, where he had several rooms dedicated to himself; his wife Pauline; and both sets of their parents. Through his contributions, he established the Pauline Berger Professorship at the University of Georgia, as well as several assistant-ships in the School of Social Work. Dr. Berger was an avid bridge player in several clubs in Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, a professor at the University of Georgia's School of Social Work. He is survived by his sons, Michael L. (Jane) Berger, J.D., of Athens, and Marc S. (Caren) Berger, M.D., of Florida; and grandchildren, Lou Berger, of Colorado, Jim Berger, of Kentucky, Sarah Beth Berger Elsbernd, of Athens, Seth Berger, of Massachusetts, Ari Berger, of New York, Monica Berger and Joel Berger, of Texas, Jeffrey Stuart and Joshua Pond, of Florida, and Kimberly Pond, of Texas. he is also survived by many great-grand-children, nieces, nephews, and their children, as well as his special friends, Rosalie Budnoff, Kathryn Keough, and June and Frank Bruchtrup, of Dallas, Texas. The family wishes to thank Oconee Area Home Care and Gentiva Hospice for all of their dedicated service and devotion in helping the family through this difficult time.
