Allen Louis (Alkie) RICHARDS Obituary

News Death Notice

RICHARDS, Allen Louis "Alkie" aged 89, died peacefully in Cape Coral, Florida on February 11, 2013. The son of the late John Andrew Richards and Viola Tillison Richards, Allen was born in Bristol, Tennessee in 1923. He is survived by his wife Rosemary, his children, Julie, Amy, and Mark, his sisters, Lynn and JoAnn, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Matthew, his sisters Louise and Margie. Alkie graduated from Miamisburg High School in 1941. He was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball and baseball, earning an athletic scholarship to The University of Cincinnati. College was interrupted by WWII, where he served in the Pacific for the Marine Corps. In the course of his college career, Alkie earned 16 varsity letters, 5 from Penn State, on the GI Bill, while in the military and 11 from the University of Cincinnati. He was invited to join the Chicago Bears by the legendary coach George Halas, but declined the invitation. In 1985, he was inducted into the Cincinnati Bearcat Hall of Fame for football, basketball and baseball, an accomplishment that will never be matched. He later returned to UC and earned a Master's degree in Education. After college, he lived in Tipp City, Ohio, working in Tipp City and Troy for over 30 years as a teacher, coach, and the Director of Athletics. He also earned an induction into the Ohio Athletic Director's Hall of Fame. The family would like to extend an invitation to gather and share stories in a celebration of Alkie's life, March 9, 4:00-7:00 in the old Broadway gym in Tipp City, located at 233 West Broadway. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in honor of Tippecanoe Middle and High School athletics, scholarship opportunities earmarked for "in-need" athletes, serving to cover Pay-To-Play fees. Alkie's athletic life opened doors that would have, otherwise, never been available to him. Your donations would do the same for another child. Send checks to: Tippecanoe Educational Endowment, P.O. Box 626, Tipp City, Ohio 45371 (Alkie Richards written on memo line). Messages can be sent to Alkie's daughters at: jrichosu@netzero.com or aagrescowle@aol.com
