Charles PORTERFIELD Obituary

News Death Notice

PORTERFIELD, Charles 85, formerly of Kettering, Ohio, passed away on November 27, 2013. Charles, the son of Merritt and Emma Porterfield, was born in Osceola, Iowa, and was a graduate of Garden Grove High School. He worked for Meadow Gold Ice Cream until joining the Army. After completing his initial training and being released to the reserves, Charles was united in marriage to Betty Lou Spellerberg on June 17, 1950 in Murray, Iowa. Shortly after, he was recalled to active duty and served in Korea. Chuck worked for Super Valu Stores for 32 years, starting in Des Moines, transferring to Minneapolis and finally settling in Kettering in 1976. Chuck was an active member and Elder of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church where he was also very involved with youth fellowship programs. He volunteered at the Mound Golf Course for over 15 years, served on the Super Valu Credit Union Board for over 20 years, was an active member of the Antioch Shrine, and enjoyed golf and gardening. He is survived by his sons, Greg of Minnesota and T.J. (Mary Jane) of Nevada; grandsons, Sean, Ben; granddaughter, Alexandra; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents, two brothers and a sister. A memorial service will be held on December 17 at the United Methodist Church, Murray, Iowa. Committal service will follow at Murray Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if desired, contributions may be made to Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, Kettering, Ohio.
