WEST, Darwin "Red" age 83 passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. Red was born in Dayton on December 21, 1930 to the late Edmund and Oakel West. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gerrie (Harr) West; his daughter, Christine (John) Decker; sons, Patrick (Kathy) , John (Joy), David (Donelle), Jim (Erren); 20 grandchildren, Scott Taylor, Michael (Clare) Taylor, Anne (Lavi) Lee, Katy (Anthony) Collura, Amy (David) Kovacs, Dan (Lisa) West, Theresa (Noel) Igot, Mary West, Tom, Luke, Christopher West, Nick, Joseph, Jessica West, Kaleb, Abbie, Shaun (Haley) West, Kier West, Alli (Shaun) Thompson. He is also survived by 11 great grandchildren, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Wanda Harr and family, Petie Balsom and family and numerous other relatives and friends. Red graduated from Wilbur Wright High School, Class of 1949. He enjoyed the sports of baseball, football and basketball. He participated in many other activities at Wilbur Wright. Red is a 3 year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Red was very proud of his 25 years spent on the Dayton Fire Department as a fire fighter. After retirement, he continued to keep in touch with other retirees. Red leaves a legacy of playing and coaching sports in Dayton. He mentored hundreds of boys from CYO to amateur baseball. He loved to watch his family and grandchildren in their activities. Red was on the Carroll High School Booster Board. He took an active part in the construction of the stadium press box. Red was active at St. Helen's Church and work there for 15 years. The family will receive friends and family from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014 followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Helen Catholic Church, 5100 Burkhardt Road, Riverside, OH with Father David Brinkmoeller, celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Helen Church, 5100 Burkhardt Road, Riverside, OH 45431 or St. Leonards Benevolent Fund, 8100 Clyo Road, Centerville, OH 45458 in Red's name.
