ACTON, Ernest J. (Jack) Age 80, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2005 in Tampa, Florida, where he currently resided. He was born February 15, 1925, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and later moved to St. Louis, MO, where he attended Roosevelt High School in 1941. He married Roberta (Smith) Acton, who preceded him in death in 1989. Jack served for 28 years as a pilot in the United States Air Force. He was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Hunter AFB in Savannah, Georgia in the late1950s. While sitting on alert with SAC, he obtained certification from the Air War College and also received recognition for contributions he made in updating the current course on the B-47 Stratojet. Jack served in the Korean War and also flew the C-130 Hercules in Viet Nam during the late 1960's. He carried out countless missions providing essential airlift support to the troops on the ground. He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel and retired in 1967. Mr. Acton received degrees from The University of Tennessee in the 1950's and from Texas A&M in the 1960's. In 1977, he and Roberta moved to Ohio and eventually settled in Pleasant Hill, where they lived until her death in 1989. Jack was a member of Grace Bible Church for more than 25 years and served as a trustee on the church council there for many years. He was a tax consultant for H & R Block and also worked for Riverside of Miami County for a number of years. On December 5, 1992, he was united in marriage to Joann Y. Truman in Springfield, OH. In 2001, Jack and Joann relocated to Tampa, FL, where they have been very active members of the Van Dyke United Methodist Church. Jack was well loved there and known for his customary friendly hugs, always available to his beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. Jack is survived by his wife, Joann, his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Trudy Acton, Death Valley, CA; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca (Randall) and Gary Tucker, Piqua, OH; Lauren and Jim Bucher, Dayton, OH; stepchildren, Linda Cetta and husband Don of Petaluma, CA; Diane Keyser and husband David and Jim Carryer and wife Karen, both of Tampa, FL; Mark Carryer of Springfield, OH; Lt. Colonel Carla Spikowski and husband Andy of Edwards AFB, CA. He is further survived by 5 grandchildren and numerous beloved step grandchildren. Memorial services for Ernest "Jack" Acton will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 4, at Van Dyke United Methodist Church, 17030 Lakeshore Road, Lutz, Florida 33558. Pastor Matthew Hartsfield will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to Van Dyke United Methodist Church or Grace Bible Church, 1500 Groop Rd., Springfield, OH 45504.
