News Death Notice

KUGEL, Howard E. 92, of Kettering, formerly of Xenia, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Sycamore Hospital. He was born November 24, 1919, in Harmony, Pennsylvania, the son of Walter F. and Alice Kradel Kugel. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and was a veteran of the US Army, serving during World War II. He graduated from Penn State University's first aeronautical engineering class in 1943. He served as an aeronautical engineer at the Aircraft Laboratory as well as the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH. He served as the Chief of Structures for the F-5E, the C-141 and other major Air Force weapon systems. He was selected to serve on the Aircraft Loads Committee of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA - the precursor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) from 1955-1957 which was headed by Gen(ret) "Jimmy" Doolittle. He retired from WPAFB in 1974 after 29 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Hannah (Peebles) Kugel, also a Penn State graduate whoAm he married, April 7, 1944, two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan (Karen) Kugel, and Bill (Vicki) Kugel, all of Oakwood, four grandchildren, Jeff Kugel, Dayton, Lauren (Derek) Edgell, Denver, CO, Emily Kugel and Ryan Kugel, both of Oakwood, a sister-in-law, Agnes Peebles, Cranberry Twp, PA, a niece, Marlene Kelley, Butler Co., PA, and by many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister, Leona Thomas. Howard will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Services will be held at 10am, Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 990 Old Springfield Pike, Xenia, with Rev. Brian Maguire officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7pm Friday, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens, Xenia.
