HUNT, Dr. Thomas Caspar Dr. Thomas Caspar Hunt, beloved husband, father, educator, author, mentor, and friend, passed away on April 17, 2014. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Hunt attended Loras College, earning an undergraduate degree in History, graduating magna cum laude in 1952. Catholic University of America awarded him an S.T.L. in 1956, and an M.A. in Secondary Education Administration in 1965. He earned his Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies (Social and Historical Foundations of Education) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1971. He served as a priest in the Diocese of Madison from 1956 to 1969. He was recently awarded a second, honorary doctorate from Loras College in recognition of his achievements in research and education. He was a distinguished historian and educator, and served as a Fellow in the Center for Catholic Education at the University of Dayton, where he had taught since 1996. Dr. Hunt was a renowned researcher and expert on the topic of Catholic education. He was a member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Catholic Educational Association, and published twenty-seven books. Prior to his appointment at the University of Dayton, Dr. Hunt was also a distinguished professor at Virginia Tech for twenty-five years, earning the William E. Wine award for Faculty Achievement and chairing the Honor Committee, amongst many other accomplishments. His unrivaled command of history and education and their many lessons, along with his unwavering guidance, advocacy and mentorship were and will continue to be a blessing to countless people. In the words of one of his former students: "Thank you for helping me to think of history as a living thing... You continue to have an effect even beyond your stunning lectures." Dr. Hunt is survived by his wife, Karen Hunt, of Centerville, OH; brother, John Hunt of Verona, WI; sister, Sue Hunt Esser of Greenville, SC; and two daughters, Staci Hunt Ramsey of Union, KY and Eryn Hunt of Cincinnati, OH, along with 3 beloved grandchildren and many other family members and friends. A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Good Shepherd Catholic Parish at St. James Catholic Church, 1128 St. James Ct., Madison, WI with Monsignor Thomas Baxter presiding and Father Jay Poster concelebrating. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the beginning of Mass, with the procession and burial to follow Mass at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison. A memorial service will also be held at the University of Dayton at a later date, with details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Center for Catholic Education at the University of Dayton, 300 College Park, Dayton, OH 45469-2961.
