James Donald McCary

Devine, Texas

James Donald McCary, age 84, of Devine, Texas, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born August 26, 1929, in Landersville.

He was preceded in death in 2010 by his wife of 53 years, Lavonia Wallace McCary; parents, James Miller and Walsie Dunlap McCary; and brother, Billy Ray McCary.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Bragg and husband, Kevin, of Lytle, Texas; sisters, Mary Ann Boyles of Landersville and Brenda Gayle Garrett of Mount Hope; grandchildren, Kevin James and Cathy Brown of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kenneth Colton Bragg and Kileen Nicole Bragg of Lytle, Texas; niece, Myra Bryson of Trinity; nephews, Glenn Boyles of Decatur, Greg Boyles of Hillsboro and Steve McCary of Decatur.

McCary joined the United States Army Air Force at age 17 in January 1947. He retired from the USAF in 1968 and went to work for the United States Postal Service. He retired in 1989 as Postmaster in Zapata, Texas. Since 1968, he also owned and operated his own ranch in Devine, Texas, raising cattle and growing coastal bermuda. His final career was running his own successful gun business "Mac's Guns" for over 20 years.

McCary was a 52-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He also served as BMA Director for District 1 for several years.

Despite his accomplishments and successes, he was most proud of his three grandchildren. Kevin James Brown, graduated from Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and is serving in the United States Air Force to follow in his grandpa's footsteps. Kenneth Colton Bragg played football for two years at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, then transferred his junior year to TAMU-SA to help his grandpa this past year. Kileen Nicole Bragg is a freshman at Texas A&M University in College Station majoring in Biomedical Science, and made her grandpa a "Proud Aggie Grandfather".

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014, in the Hurley Funeral Home Chapel of Devine, Texas, from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014, in the Hurley Funeral Home Chapel of Devine, Texas, with interment to follow in the San Jose Burial Park, 8235 Mission Road, San Antonio, TX 78214.
