Alan Phillip Culver Obituary
Alan Phillip Culver

DELMAR-Alan Phillip Culver passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, after a long illness. Alan was born on June 23, 1938, to the late Arba and Madelyn Culver in Delmar, Del.

He grew up in the area and graduated with academic honors from Laurel High School in 1956. After six months reserve duty at Fort Knox, Ky., he went to work as a radio dispatcher with A.W. Perdue & Son in Salisbury. In 1959, he married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Adams, whom he met in Sunday school at St. George's United Methodist Church when they were young children.

In 1970, they moved to Salisbury when Alan was promoted to management at Perdue. He traveled extensively in his work and received numerous awards and accolades. During his career, he also obtained a U.S. patent for a tray used in packaging. He was very dedicated to his family and his work. A humble man, Alan valued integrity and hard work, both professionally and personally. He retired from Perdue Inc. as a vice president of Quality Assurance after 38 years.

After he retired, Alan started a tree nursery in Delmar and what started as a hobby turned into a successful business: Walnut Tree Farm. In 2003, Alan retired a second time when he and Joyce moved to the Orlando, Fla., area. Alan continued to keep busy with volunteer work including growing plants and trees and donating them to Habitat for Humanity for landscaping new homes and working in Florida Hospital's thrift shop repairing small appliances. In 2003, he also became a Certified Master Gardener through the University of Florida program. His hobbies included collecting coins and shot glasses, water color painting and stained glass-making although he was happiest digging trees and riding tractors.

Alan was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, William Robert (Bobby), Richard Lee (Dickie) and Albert Staten. Alan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce; his sisters, Joan Hart (Wayne) and Bonnie Culver; sister-in-law Kathleen Pedersen (John); and children, Alana Brenner (Matt) of Orlando; Lisa Culver-Jones of Auburn, Wash., and David Culver (Caroline) of Boston. He had seven grandchildren, Auzdon, Brittney, Christina, Madelyn, Chase, Susannah and Anthony; and countless nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. followed by a traditional memorial service and formal celebration of Alan's life at 2 p.m., both at St. George's United Methodist Church in Delmar. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the , Central and North Florida at 378 CenterPointe Circle, No. 1280, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 ( or St. George's United Methodist Church, c/o Rick Culver, 8905 Jackson Road, Laurel, DE 19956.
