Charles H. Wieland, III

Easton—Charles Harry Wieland, III of Easton passed away on December 30, 2012 at his home after a long and happy life.

Born January 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Jennie Elizabeth Bourne and Charles Harry

Wieland Jr. He began his education at the Longwoods one room schoolhouse. He then attended the South Street School (presently the Academy of the Arts) and in 1938 he graduated from Idlewild High School. He attended Salisbury State Teachers College for two years.

After working at the Peoples Ice Company he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 where he attained the rank of Major. He was stationed with the first command at Mitchell Field, New York and there he met Betty Wilcox whom he married in 1943.

Charles, known to his friends as "Bud", devoted his business career to helping individuals and families invest in life insurance and retirement plans, working primarily with Connecticut Mutual. He was the first Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) on Delmarva and was widely respected in his field.

Charles was active in the Easton community, helping to re-establish the Chamber of Commerce, volunteering for Waterfowl Festival, the Izaak Walton League recycling program and Chesapeake Maritime Museum. He served as president of the YMCA, Rotary Club, AARP, Izaac Walton, and was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed gardening, fellowship with friends, boating, crabbing, fishing, and life on the Miles River where he lived with his wife of 69 years. Charles is survived by his wife, Betty Wieland; two sisters; two brothers; and six children, Charles H. Wieland IV (Chivy) and wife Sandy, William Wieland and wife Becky, Tommy Wieland, Sally Smith and husband Andy, Debbie Meredith and husband Paul, and Robert Wieland and wife Leigh Anne; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Betty Jane and grandson Matthew.

A funeral service will be held at the Grace Lutheran Church on Sunday January 6, 2013 at 2:30pm with a visitation one hour prior to service. A private interment will be held at a later date at The Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery.
