Daniel "Danny" George Collins

AURORA, COLORADO- The family of Daniel "Danny" George Collins sadly reports his transition from labor to rest on July 10, 2014.

Danny was the oldest son of Margretta and George Melvin Collins of Fruitland, Maryland. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 28, 1943. The family returned to Fruitland when Danny was a baby and all of formative years were spent there. He was educated in the Wicomico County Public School System. In 1960 he entered the United States Army where he would serve for twenty one years. He married Sharron Dale of Colorado and to that union was one child, Angela. Their marriage ended in divorce. His military career spanned numerous assignments to include a tour of duty in the Republic of South Vietnam from September 1967 through September 1968 where he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.

Upon his return to the United States he was selected to serve in an experimental army unit that focused on the impact of race on the overall mission of the Army and the effect of race of the individual soldier. Danny believed in the Unit's mission and considered his assignment there one of the highlights of his career. He became very attached to the members of the Unit and maintained contact with them throughout the rest of his military career and into civilian life.

In 1980 Danny retired from the Army, but he remained a loyal soldier and maintained many of his military relationships into his civilian life. He chose to remain in Colorado when he retired.

On April 18, 1983 he married Shirley Ridge and settled in Aurora Colorado where he remained until his death. He was an avid enthusiast of outdoors activities, spending time fishing with his grandchildren and supporting their sports activities. He made an annual trip across country to Fruitland to spend time with family. His last trip was September 2013.

Danny is survived by wife of thirty one years, Shirley, and his daughter Angelia (Marcus) Murphy, Colorado; grandchildren Shamekia Collins and great-granddaughter Aniya Simpson; grandsons Marquel and Mekhi Murphy. His father George Melvin Collins preceded him in death, but he is survived by his mother Margretta Ann Collins, Baltimore; Brother Ronald (Louise) Collins, Baltimore; Norma Lee (Horace) Gilchrist, Montgomery, Alabama. Also there are many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives that will morn his passing. His final resting place will be at Fort Logan National Veteran's Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in Danny's name to the Denver Hospice Center, 8299 Lowry Blvd., Denver, Colorado. Expressions of sympathy and condolence can be sent to the 803 Quray Street, Aurora. Colorado 80017.
