Frances Townsend

Salisbury-Frances Townsend, 86, of Salisbury died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. Frances was born Aug. 27, 1927, to the late William W. and Mary T. Dixon.

Frances was a great friend, lover of social events and an avid games person. She learned to dance and play cards from her father, Bill Dixon. She was a keen card player and could hold her own in any game from bridge to gin rummy. She and her husband, Alton, were longtime Elks club members. They hosted parties and attended Cotillion dances for years.

Frances started her career working for the local draft board during World War II. Shortly thereafter, she met and married Alton Townsend, who was an Army Armor Division lieutenant. The couple lived in Rehoboth Beach and she worked for a Delaware banking firm.

Alton answered his second call to duty for the Korean Conflict and Frances moved to Virginia and Camp Pickett. She served her country there as secretary to the base commander. After his tour in Korea, Alton and Frances returned to Salisbury.

Frances took a position as executive secretary to William H. Bateman, company president, with the then Wayne Pump Co. and retained her duties as executive assistant even after Dresser Industries bought the firm. When William Bateman retired, Frances became his personal assistant, and managed his business ventures until his death and her retirement.

Frances, fondly called "Nanny" by her family, was caring and giving. She supported the Special Olympics, PETA and numerous veterans' charities.

She often said of herself, "For a girl who grew up on Upton Street, I have had a wonderful life." She experienced life with enthusiasm and joy until the day she passed.

Frances is survived by her sister, Doris D. Webster of Salisbury; two nieces, Valerie Webster of Edgewater, Md., and Sharon Kriegisch (Robert) of Salisbury; two nephews, Jeffery Webster (Debra), and Steven Webster (Frances), all of Salisbury; three great-nieces and five great-nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton M. Townsend.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at Holloway Funeral Home, where friends and family may call one hour prior. Interment will follow the service at Parsons Cemetery.
