James Hungerford Obituary
James T. Hungerford Jr

Westover -Sgt. James Thomas Hungerford, Jr., 83, of Westover, Maryland, passed away, following an extended illness, at P.R.M.C., Sunday, November 24, 2013, with his loving family by his side.

Born August 12, 1930 in Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD, he was the eldest son of the late James Thomas Hungerford, Sr. and the late Earva F. Mathias Hungerford.

Mr. Hungerford proudly served in the U.S. Army as a tank driver for two years and nine months on the front lines in Korea, earning the rank of Sgt. Although he missed "home" he was very proud to be serving his country.

Following his military service, he began a career that was to last 65 years, owning and operating saw mills. He and two of his brothers, Roger and Remus, started their first saw mill, trading as "Hungerford Brothers", where he also served on the Montgomery County Forestry Board. In 1978 he relocated to the eastern shore where he continued his passion for the lumber industry by establishing the Hungerford Saw Mill in Westover, eventually working with two of his sons, James and Joseph. At the age of 60, James used the trees from his own property, processed through his mill to build his own home in Westover.

Although sawing limber was his passion, he also enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years, Thelma E. Kidwell Hungerford; one daughter, Rose Ann Hungerford; four sons, Gordon Thomas Hungerford, Edwin Jerry Hungerford, James Walter Hungerford, Sr., and Joseph Lee Hungerford; two brothers, Walter Remus Hungerford and Charles Edward Hungerford; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Lou Herbertson and two brothers, William Roger Hungerford and Allen Benjamin Hungerford.

A memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Jeffrey T. Howard, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church, 208 Market St., Pocomoke City, MD where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. A luncheon, in the fellowship room, will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Richard Henson Cancer Center, 100 E. Carroll St., Salisbury, MD 21801 or to the Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 208 Market Street, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.
