Salisbury—Mary Jane Shellhorn Black of Salisbury, Maryland passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, May 17, 2013. Jane was born to Adolf and Kathryn Shellhorn of Pine Bluff, Wyoming on March 30, 1925. The oldest of 3 children, Jane was preceded in death by Jack Shellhorn of St. Petersburg Florida, and is survived by Bill Shellhorn of Auburn, Michigan. She was happily married for 63 years to the late Charles Nelson Black III. Together Jane and Nelson had two children, Charles N. Black IV, married to Carole of Eden, and Judith M. Andrews of Salisbury.
During WWII Jane worked at the Pentagon for the Army Air Force, predicting weather patterns pertinent to missions in Europe. Later she worked as a bookkeeper for Suburban Trust bank, and then a records' clerk for AT&T. She was President of the Women's Thursday Evening Club in Bladensburg, Md. She served on the Alter Committee at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Jane's first love was her family, and her second love was the fire service. Jane started her own Fire Department Gift catalog business and traveled to many states attending the fire conventions and meeting people in the fire service. She was a Life Member and Past President of Bladensburg VFD Ladies Auxiliary. She helped form the Maryland Fire Chiefs Ladies Auxiliary, and served as their second President. In 1993 Jane and Nelson were awarded the Preservation Trust of Wicomico Inc.'s award for their work in the Chesapeake Fire Museum located in Hebron, Maryland. They helped start the museum and remained active until Mr. Black died in 2005. In 2000, the Maryland Fire Chiefs convention book was dedicated to Jane and Nelson for their work and dedication within the Maryland Fire Chiefs organization.
Jane and Nelson enjoyed traveling in all forms of transportation. Together they obtained their pilots licenses and flew around the country in their own airplane. Later they purchased a yacht and traveled the intracoastal waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. They were in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 4 years, and were proud members of the Kent Island Yacht Club. Jane and Nelson travelled the continental states in their motorhome twice. They spent 30 days in the Orient, journeyed through England and Ireland, relaxed in Hawaii and explored Alaska.
Jane and Nelson both enjoyed life to the fullest. She often commented on what was accomplished by "the love of two": Jane and Nelson have 7 grandchildren—Jon David Black, wife Mary; Charles N.
