Richard (Dick) Atwood Adkins

Mardela Springs—Richard (Dick) Atwood Adkins, 82, of Mardela Springs, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Flavins Atwood Adkins and Bertha Mae Lemon Adkins.

He was a US Army veteran and past member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer role that allowed him to enjoy his love of boating. He was the co-owner of D & S Electronics, a business he started in 1968 and ran for nearly 15 years until he sold it and retired. With a growing passion for photography, following retirement he enjoyed traveling by motor home and capturing the splendor of our country's outdoor beauty, especially that which depicted the many unique aspects and scenes of the Eastern Shore.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Sutton Adkins; four children - Martin Adkins of Edgewater, MD, Michael Adkins of Cumming, GA, Judith (Judy) Adkins of Salisbury, Richard Mark Adkins of Keystone, CO; and their Mother, Elizabeth Adkins of Salisbury; three stepdaughters - Maria Antoinette Weaver (Kenneth) of Hebron, MD, Regina Aileen De Leon Guerrero (Artemio S.) of Oak Harbor, WA and Barbara Louis Guy of Salisbury; ten grandchildren; and three sisters, Shirley Silvia, Phyllis Ann Turner and Beverly A. Gordy, all of Salisbury.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Eugene Adkins and a sister, Mildred Louise Rickards.

Among the many things for which he will be remembered was his "can-do" attitude - he would tackle most anything and often taught himself how to do it - from fixing cars, to building furniture and much, much more; and he loved to teach those skills to his kids. And who can forget his love of music and his beautiful voice…he continued to sing, right up to the very end of his life. His gregarious personality, charming and humorous manner, and down-to-earth nature will be missed by family and friends alike.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. William Kniceley will officiate.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Eastern Shore Regional Office of the or the Wicomico Nursing Home.
