Robert E. Hortie, Sr.

Salisbury-Gy. Sgt. Robert Ernest Hortie, Sr., 83, United States Marine Corps, Ret., of Salisbury, MD, peacefully passed away on October 15, 2013 with his family at his side.

He was born October 20, 1929, in Tewksbury, MA, the only child of Grace Helen Gibson of Winthrop, MA and professional baseball player, Admiral Joseph "Pepper" Martin of Rome, NY. He was the adopted son of Henry H. and Clara H. Landgraf Hortie of Conway, MA. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines at the age of 15, and retired from the USMC at age 35. He married Dorothy Agnes Bowling on July 25, 1950 at St. John's Catholic Church in Loogootee, IN. The Hortie family resided on various military bases until his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1966, and then resided in the Hyattsville/Lanham, MD area before moving to Salisbury, MD in 1996. He served his country honorably and faithfully as a 'lifer' and was one of the USMC's "Chosin Few" that fought in the Korean War; he was wounded in action and earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, as well as many other medals. He was an outstanding sharpshooter and an avid hunter.

Active in the community most of his life, he volunteered for the Parkdale HS Booster Club during the 1970's, he was an officer and member of the Lions of District 22-C, the Salisbury-Wicomico Lions Club, and a co-founder of the Lions Merrick Camp for the Deaf in Nanjemoy, MD. He received many honors and awards for his work. He ran the family's drapery business for many years, was an avid Washington Redskins fan, and he and Dottie loved nothing better than picking crabs in "The Crab Shack" with their family and friends.

He is survived by seven children, Shirley H. (Dennis R.) Platt of Ogden, UT; Margaret A. Hortie of Salisbury; Robert E. (Nancy D.) Hortie, Jr. of Centreville, MD; Ronald F. (Phyllis B.) Hortie of New Market, MD; Laurie A. Hortie of Greenbelt, MD; Nancy L. (Jerry J.) Meyers of Salisbury; Elizabeth H. Hortie (Kimball Barnes) of Washington, DC; and daughter-in-law, Jean M. Hortie of Gastonia, NC. He was a beloved "Papaw" to 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Hortie is also survived by his sisters, Eileen Gavin (William) Lewis of Severna Park, MD, Margaret A. "Peggy" Gavin, JoAnne Gavin Beaudoin, and Mary J. Gavin (John) Sullivan and a brother, Michael J. (Connie) Gavin, all of Winthrop, MA; and brothers, Richard Lee (Betty) Martin of Hemet, CA and Gerry J. (Bev) Martin of Pawley's Island, SC, and his beloved and extended Bowling family in Loogootee, IN.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dottie (2012), his son, William H. Hortie (2007); all four of his parents, and two sisters, Patricia Gavin and Marian Martin Reick.

Friends may call at Bounds Funeral Home, 705 East Main St, Salisbury, MD 21802 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm on Sunday, Oct 20, 2012. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 535 Riverside Dr, Salisbury on Monday, October 21, 2012 at 11 am. He and Dottie will be interred at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Loogootee, IN at a later date.
