Obituary Condolences

Blanche E. Skidmore

AGE: 93 • Wilmington

Blanche Edith Skidmore, 93, of Wilmington, died on June 26, 2014 after a brief illness.

Blanche was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Dr. William and Blanche Edith Skidmore. She received her A.B. in Chemistry from Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA in 1941, and her M.A. in Biochemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana in 1942. After graduation she worked in biochemical research and taught chemistry at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Her outgoing personality and desire to help people led her to join the American Red Cross in 1951, where she worked in a variety of leadership roles. Among her assignments were directing disaster assistance and fund raising. After multiple work-related relocations in New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, she settled permanently in Wilmington, Delaware. From 1974 until her retirement in 1987, Blanche served as Executive Director of the Delaware Red Cross. After retirement she continued to be active, travelling to Europe several times and, as a member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning, serving in several organizational roles.

Blanche left a legacy of service to the community and love of all animals, especially cats. Though she was an only child, she surrounded herself with wonderful friends. She is survived by cousins Alan Skidmore of Maine and Susan Forsyth of East Hartland, Connecticut. She is also survived by her close friends, Frank and Margaret Tagliaferro of Newtown, Connecticut and Patricia Rittenhouse of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.

A memorial service will be held in the Rodney Chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania Ave. & Rodney St., Wilmington on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Her interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, Disaster Relief, PO Box 767, Wilmington, DE 19899 or the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A. Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
