Carroll W. Biggs Jr.

Dr. Carroll Weston Biggs, Jr., 87, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away on February 11, 2013 at Bridgewater Home.

He was born in Ashley, Ohio, on April 17, 1925 and was the son of the late Carroll W. and Dora Irene Martin Biggs.

Carroll attended Ohio State University where he received his BA and MA degrees and received a PHD in School Administration from Columbia University. While in Ohio he was a teacher and coach at Big Walnut High School and Superintendent of schools in Chatfield, Woodville, and Westerville, Ohio. While in Delaware he was superintendent of Schools for the Alfred I. DuPont School District, he was the First Superintendent, after desegregation, of the New Castle County School District; he was President of the American Association of School Administrators and served on various educational boards throughout the United States.

Carroll was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg; Kiwanis and Rotary Club in Delaware, and the Elks Club in Harrisonburg. He also served on the Board at Spotswood Country Club where he also enjoyed playing tennis and working with the youth tennis programs; he served on the Board of Greater Madison where he was the Membership chairman. He was also a member of the Presidents' Council and Duke Club and huge athletic supporter of the JMU football team and men's and women's basketball teams.

During WWII he proudly served our country in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Young in the Pacific.

On June 8, 1947, he married Joan Dawn Biggs, in Cardington, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on November 30, 2005. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Christine Biggs, his parents, and a sister, Muriel Warner.

He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Biggs Elliott and husband, Chip of State College, PA, a son, Mike Biggs and wife, Susie of Sun City West, AZ, and daughter, Cheri Biggs Smith and husband, Vic, of Harrisonburg; as well as 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Biggs will be cremated at Lindsey Funeral Homes and Crematory in Harrisonburg, and a memorial service will be held 2 pm, Saturday, February 16, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John F. Sloop officiating.
