Carson R. Herr, 96, passed away at Compassionate Care Hospice in Wilmington, Delaware on November 5, 2012.
Born in 1916 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Edgar and Frances (Ruhl) Herr.
Carson graduated from Manheim (PA) High School in 1934 and received a B.S. in Education from West Chester State Teacher's College in 1942. Upon graduation, he immediately entered the Army. From 1942 - 1945, he served as a cryptographer in the South Pacific during World War II. Carson received an M.A. degree in educational psychology and school administration from New York University in 1950. Over the years, he took many additional post-graduate classes at Columbia, Rutgers, Temple, and the University of Delaware.
Carson taught school in Florida and New Jersey before coming to Delaware. When he came to Delaware, he was employed by Lindsay, Oberholzer, and Company and the Prudential and Horace Mann Insurance Companies before accepting a position in the Wilmington Public Schools as principal of the Manpower Development Training Center. He joined the New Castle County Vo-Tech School District in 1969 where he served until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure in the Vo-Tech District, he served first as Assistant Principal and then as Principal of the Delcastle Technical High School. His last three years with the District he spent as principal of Hodgson Vo-Tech High School.
Carson was a very active member of the community. He was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and on various other committees. He was an active member of the Claymont Lions Club for over 40 years and president of the Ashbourne Hills Civic Association. After he retired, Carson became president of the Delaware Retired School Personnel Association and a member of the West Chester University Alumni Board of Directors. He also taught Defensive Driving through AARP and delivered Meals on Wheels. In his free time, Carson enjoyed traveling and attending classes at the University of Delaware's Academy of Lifelong Learning.
Carson was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn (Kay) Predmore Herr. Carson is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Schrass and her husband Carl and Wendy Barba and her husband Joe; and three grandchildren, Karl Schrass, Casey Barba, and Melanie Barba. He is also survived by his nephew, Scott Hollinger and niece, Beth Hollinger. He is predeceased by his step-brother Eugene Hollinger. Carson was very close to Kay's family members.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on November 24, at 11 am at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1120 Darley Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
