Domenick Cannatelli, age 91 of Wilmington, DE peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 in the loving embrace of his family.
Born on August 18, 1923 in Wilmington, DE, Domenick was the son of the late James and Mary (Bruno) Cannatelli. He was a graduate of Wilmington High's class of 1941. He was also a graduate of the University of Delaware, class of 1949 in mechanical engineering, and later earned his Professional Engineer status. As were so many of his generation, Mick was a proud WWII veteran. He served in the Army Air Corps as an aerial engineer in a C-47 "Skytrain" squadron in the European Theater. He was a decorated airman and honorably discharged.
After the war, Mick began a 35 year career with the DuPont Company and married his beloved wife, Wanda Derr of Wilmington, DE. Together, Mick and Wanda had three children, Michael, Joanne and Bonnie, who multiplied into 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Mick and Wanda were a passionate Big Band dance couple. They loved their growing family and shared many joyous weekends at their Indian River beach home. Mick liked fishing and golfing with his younger brother, Babe.
Domenick is preceded in death by his three brothers, Frank, Babe and Lenny; two sisters, Louise and Peggy, and granddaughter, Kelly.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, September 1 from 5:00-7:00PM. A service in celebration of Domenick's life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 2 at 10:30AM. Interment, with military honors, will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
