Donald Francis Stauffer, a native of Wilmington, Delaware and long time resident of Kennett Township, Pennsylvania, and late of Jennersville, Pennsylvania, Donald F. Stauffer passed on at age 89 on February 28, 2014.
Don was born and raised in Wilmington. He graduated from P. S DuPont High School in 1942. After a year at the University of Delaware, he volunteered for the U. S. Army and served in Company K, 333rd Infantry, 84th Division, in Europe, for which he was awarded two battle stars for the Ziegfried Line and the Battle of the Bulge.
After discharge from the Army in 1945, Don transferred to Ohio State University where he was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in 1947. After a year's graduate work at Princeton University, Donald joined Hercules Incorporated (then Hercules Powder Company) in 1948 and enjoyed a productive 27 year career with them. His last 17 years with Hercules were in the International Department where, among other assignments, he was Manager, Canadian Technical Service, Manager of Development, Managing Director Hercules British Honduras in Central America; Managing Director, Hercules Far East in Tokyo; and Product Director, Resins for Hercules Europe.
After retirement in 1976, he established a consulting organization, International Development Associates, which specialized in information services, particularly with respect to resinous products utilized in the adhesives, ink, rubber, paper and other industries. Until his activity was curtailed by death, his work included publication of a quarterly newsletter, Tackifier Topics, monthly statistical reports, as well as a biennial multi-client Study of International Rosin Markets. He also served as Associate Editor for a bi-monthly publication, Forest Chemicals Review, for which he contributed informative columns.
In addition to his professional activities, Don has been a member of Theta Chi fraternity, the Greenville Country Club, the Princeton Club of New York and the Tokyo American Club. He also is an ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church USA. He has served as a Committee Member in both New Castle Presbytery and Donegal Pennsylvania Presbytery, and for many years had participated in delivery of Meals on Wheels and other charitable activities. Professionally, he was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Societe de Chimie Industrial, Commercial Development & Marketing Association, the Pine Chemicals Association, and honorary member of Tau Beta Pi. Finally, among many other interests, he was an avid bridge player and achieved the rank of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.
Donald has enjoyed an active, fun-filled, well-traveled 65 year marriage to Muriel Edwards Stauffer, a native of Monmouth County, New Jersey, and currently residing in Jennersville. Don is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Catherine, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Celebration of life will be at West Grove Presbyterian Church on March 15 at 10:30. The burial will be private.
