Mr. Donald King Sorber, 88, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2013. He was born in Philadelphia on June 1, 1925 and was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Alma Friel Sorber, who passed away in 2004. He is survived by his son, David and his wife, Marie; his daughter, Christine Fennessy and her son, Kevin; and his son, James and James' son, Jacob. He is also survived by his brother Charles of Dearborn, MI, his sister, Margaret of Ambler PA and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sorber grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Penn State University. He served in the Merchant Marines before embarking on a career in marketing, first with the Penn Salt Company and then with the Dupont Company where he worked from 1961 until his retirement. He then spent many years with the Philadelphia Foundation for Architecture as a tour guide and educational speaker.
Don had a remarkably wide range of interests from history and architecture to classical and big band music. He was an accomplished craftsman and wood worker and will be fondly remembered as a first class gentleman with a big heart, sharp wit, great sense of humor and a willingness to help anyone.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 7 from 6-8 pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 8 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
