Francis James Dougherty Sr. died on November 7, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital He was born in Wilmington on March 7, 1927. He met & married his wife here and raised his family here. He was known affectionately as Doc Dougherty to many.
He dedicated his life to service. He spent 2 years in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He returned home & became Commander of the VFW post in Bellefonte. Doc continued to serve his community and state. He was a member of the Brandywine Hundred Fire Dept since 1951 and over the years was chosen to be their Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief, Director & Chief. He was also elected President of the New Castle County and the Delaware State Fire Chiefs Associations. The governor appointed him Delaware State Fire Commissioner. Doc held this post for 12 years. He was a retired master plumber who always worked hard to provide for his family.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth; their 7 children; son, Francis Jr. and daughters, Elizabeth Ann, Patricia, Catherine, Mary, Ann & Marguerite, 14 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Dougherty Baker.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 12 from 6-8 pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 13 at 10 am at St. Helena's Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, 1006 Brandywine Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19809.
