Harold C. Barker, PhD

AGE: 91 • Wilmington

Harold C. Barker, PhD, age 91, of Wilmington, died December 26, 2013.

He was born in Akron, Ohio on August 6, 1922. His beloved wife, Elizabeth (Betty), of 66 years predeceased him on September 26, 2010. His dear sister Reba (Bill) Sheavly passed in 2009. He is survived by his two daughters, Jane (Denny) Connors of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Janet (Hank) Barker-Stonerook of Westerville, Ohio, and a son, Harold (Bud) Barker (Terri), Jr. of Hockessin, Delaware. He has six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

He received his B.S. from University of Akron in 1944. He served in the U.S Army Chemical Warfare Service in Europe and the Philippines. Returning to civilian life in May of 1946, post graduate degrees of Masters (1948) and doctorate in organic chemistry (1951) were awarded by the Ohio State University. Dr. Barker was elected to the Sigma Xi - Scientific Research Society.

He worked for DuPont in a variety of technical positions, all in the Wilmington area, where he also coordinated efforts to replace wax coating in all paperboard milk cartons with DuPont plastic. After taking early retirement in 1982, Dr. Barker served as a consultant to Waycross Investment Management Company.

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the Eagle award as a youth and the Silver Beaver as an adult leader.

His other interests included camping, backpacking, hiking with the Wilmington Trail Club, fishing with son and grandson, travels with his wife, a student at the Academy of Life Long Learning, and a life long love of trains with the Railroad Historical Society.

As a 50 year active member of Silverside Church, he served in a variety of lay leadership positions. A memorial service will be held at Silverside Church in the spring.
