Herbert W. Dempsey, Jr. age 82, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013 at Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care at Christiana Hospital. Born in Wilmington, DE and a graduate from Mt. Pleasant H.S.
He was a retired WO2 Warrant Officer in the U.S. Marine Corp with 27 years of services. He also retired from Sears Roebucks & Company after 25 years of service as an auto sales service rep and from Dexsta Federal Credit Union and DPL Federal Credit Union as a collections specialist.
Herb was dedicated to the bowling associations in Delaware (Wilmington Bowling Association and Delaware State Bowling Association), where he held the offices of President, Vice President and director for multiple decades. He was honored with an induction into the Wilmington Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service to the Wilmington Bowling Association. His other great love where dogs. Every dog in the neighborhood knew him as pop and stopped for a scratch and treat and they will/are sorely missing him.
Herb was preceded by his parents, Herbert W. Dempsey, Sr., Emma (King) Dempsey; Brother William Dempsey; Sister Nancy (Dempsey) Densmore; son James E. Dempsey and former wife Edwina (Roche) Dempsey. He is survived by his daughter Ruthann (Dempsey) Sydnor, her husband Jay Sydnor and two grandson's James E. Dempsey Jr. and Francis Glenn.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington DE. Memorial Services will be held Monday, November 25 @ 12:30 at the funeral home. Final resting place will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
