Howard Vaughn Rutter

Howard Vaughn Rutter, age 87, passed away Saturday March 1 at his residence in Cokesbury Retirement Community. Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Harvey P., Sr. and Helen McVey Rutter.

A graduate of Conrad High School, Vaughn attended Niagara University and Goldey Beacom College. Following his service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was employed as an accountant with Hercules for 20 years and then worked for several other companies, including Blue Cross of Delaware and Retirement Living. Later, he was church administrator for Aldersgate United Methodist Church and, following that, worked for Friess Associates as a shuttle driver for ten years. He finally retired at age 82. For over 50 years he independently managed an accounting and tax business. A 50-year member of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, Vaughn served as a member of the Session as well as on many committees. In retirement, he enjoyed leisurely exploration of our magnificent country and all that it has to offer.

In addition to his parents, Vaughn was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis (1994), his second wife, Nancy (2009), brothers Harvey Jr., David and Richard Rutter, and granddaughter Kimberly Vavala. Surviving him are his three daughters, Susan Vavala of Wilmington, Saundra Mayhew of Middletown and Donna Timney of Townsend, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as step-sons Scott Thomson of Alexandria, VA and Bruce Thomson of Ponte Vedra, FL.

A memorial celebration will be held on Sunday March 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan's Church Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 with visitation at 1:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
