James Bernard "J.B." Platz, 86 years old, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2013, after a brief illness.
J.B. was born February 13, 1927, in Texarkana, Texas, the son of the late John Emil and Jeannette Snook Platz. J.B. was preceded in death by his sister Harriet Cook and his brother John Platz. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wilma Bell Platz; and his three children: Stephen Platz of Wilmington, DE, Stephanie Platz-Vieno and her husband Mark of Leesburg, VA, and Jeanne' Platz Havermans and her husband Corwyn of Arlington, VA; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ian Platz, Stephen Vieno, and Jack Davis Havermans. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Ann Gidley and many nieces and nephews.
J.B. graduated from Texarkana High School in 1944. Prior to college, he served his country in the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, and graduated with honors with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950 and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.
He began his career with E.I. DuPont de Nemours, Inc. in LaPorte, TX and retired in 1986 after 36 years in the Bio-Chemicals department in Wilmington, DE. Of his many professional accomplishments, one of his most noteworthy achievements was being named an Engineering Fellow at DuPont. After retirement, he consulted for several years.
J.B. was a loving husband and devoted father. He was actively involved in all of his family's activities. He was passionate about University of Texas football, golfing, fishing, painting, and traveling. J.B. also assisted in daily mass, and volunteered for over 30 years at Emmanuel Hall, the Ministry of Caring, and the American Cancer Society. J.B. will be missed by Wilma, his family, and his many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, March 22, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine with visitation at 9:30 am.
