James J. "Jim" Elder

James J. "Jim" Elder of Claymont, DE, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Dolores H. Elder, who passed away in 1996.

James was the son of the late Leroy and Cora Elder. He was a graduate of Claymont High School, Class of 1948. He worked at Brandywine Race Track, Delaware Trust and retired from the Claymont Post Office. James was always involved in anything Claymont to include, Claymont Independent League, Claymont Little League, Claymont Falcons Football, Claymont Touchdown Club and Claymont Board of Education. He also proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. His love of family was unrivaled in this world. Love and respect is what he taught his family.

He is survived by his children, Michael Elder (Edna) of Claymont, Douglas Elder (Nancy) of Newark, Susan Turchen (Joe) of Wilmington, David Elder (Shannon) of New Castle; sisters, Cora Smith (Ray), Carolyn O'Hanlon; grandchildren, Brian Elder (Kateri), Doug Elder, Carl Elder (Colleen), Jeremy Elder (Nicole), Joseph Turchen, Kenneth Elder, Nicholas Elder, Emily Elder; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Billy, and Kayla Burke, Kole Turchen, Carl Elder, Jr., Christopher Elder, Kellen and expected baby boy Elder due in November; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Millie Hinderer; sisters-in-law, Catherine Hinderer and Rebecca Elder. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, William Elder; sister, Louise Pini; brothers-in-law, John Pini, Joseph O'Hanlon and Norman Hinderer.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers that have treated and helped James.

Friends may visit with the family Wednesday evening, August 27, from 6pm to 9pm and Thursday morning, August 28 from 10am to 11am at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, where the Funeral Service will be held Thursday morning at 11am. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear,DE.
