Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, surrounded by his children was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. John was born August 7, 1926 in St. Paul, MN. A WWII Navy veteran, John served from 1944-1946 in the 8th Gunnery Division on the USS Lexington. In 1950, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Thomas University and married his sweetheart Cleone in August of the same year. After completing his doctorate (Ph.D) in Chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1955 he began a 38 year career with the DuPont Company. He started as a research chemist and held several positions including technical, marketing and management roles. John's efforts resulted in the development of many DuPont products, including "Valclene" dry cleaning, DuPont Food Freezing System, "Dymel" propellants and "Freon" products and alternatives. He holds several patents and received various awards including DuPont Fluorochemicals' and Corporate Marketing Excellence Awards. He also received the Allderice Award from the CSMA for distinguished service and contributions. This year he celebrated 60 years as a member of the American Chemical Society. After retirement in 1992, he was active in consulting and became parish manager for Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
His faith, love and dedication to family and friends as well as his determination to succeed are qualities he will be remembered for by all who knew him
John was predeceased by his wife Cleone in 2008, his parents, John and Julia Daly, his brother Eugene and sister Joanne.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend is survived by his children Diane Watras (husband Stan), John (wife Sandy) and Robert (wife Anne); his grandchildren Michael, Christopher (wife Sarah), Cynthia and Andrea; his great grandson Caleb and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Methodist Country House for their care and kindness to John in the past 2 years and the staff at Christiana Hospital ICU unit 3E in the final days of his life.
A visitation for friends and family will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 from 11:00-12:00 noon at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon with burial at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc., 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047. (www.lbda.org/)
