John J. Gitney, Sr.

Mr. John J. Gitney, Sr passed away on February 2, 2014, while surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Elkton, MD on November 20, 1930 to Lenora M. Oniczuk Gitney and John E.Gitney.

Mr Gitney served in the Air Force in the capacity of an aircraft mechanic for B 47 Bombersat at Whiteman Air Force Base in Sedalia, MO. Mr. Gitney was awarded the National Defense Service Medal while serving his country.

He was employed and retired from Avon Products in Newark, DE for more than 32 years, retiring in 1985. He also owned and operated his own video company known as Aljohn Video for more than 17 years with his late wife, Margaretta Alice Gitney. John enjoyed HAM radio, boating, water skiing, videography, and military air craft. He is survived by his children, Sue Gitney Linnenbaugh, her spouse, James Linnenbaugh III, of Wilm, DE; his granddaughter Heather Joy Noland, her spouse, Thomas Nolan; and his great grandchildren, Collin T. Nolan and Erin A. Nolan all of Parkesburg, PA. In addition, he is survived by his daughter, Anne Gitney of Milford, DE, and her sons, Kurt and Patrick Seibel; and his son, John J. Gitney, Jr. of Newark, DE; as well as his daughter Juanita Gitney, of Springfield, MO; and his great grandchildren, Kyle, Caleb and Cayden Harman. He is also survived by his grandchildren Briana, Ryan, and Leaha Harman all of Springfield, MO. John is also survived by his loving companion, Grace Canata.

The family would like to thank the SICU staff at the Christiana Hospital and the Season's Hospice Center for their compassion and caring services while he was under their care. Burial and internment will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. 19701.
