Joseph Harvilla

Mr. Joseph Harvilla, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013, at his home.

Born in Beaver Meadows, PA, on March 12, 1924, Mr. Harvilla was the son of the late Andrew Harvilla and Anna Deliman Harvilla. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II. In civilian life, he made his career with the former Chrysler Corporation in Newark, where he retired from the utility personnel department in 1986 after 32 years of service.

A devout Catholic throughout his life, Mr. Harvilla was a longtime member of Holy Family parish. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed trout fishing, tending his vegetable garden, and cheering each season for his favorite teams--the Phillies, the Flyers, and the Eagles.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Helen E. Schlauch Harvilla; son, Joseph S. Harvilla of Newark; grandson, Justin Wolfe of Dover; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings, Andrew Harvilla, Peter Harvilla, Rita Danishefsky, George Harvilla, Thomas Harvilla, and Robert Harvilla.

The family extends special thanks to April Freezer, Justin Wolfe, and Bob and Kathy Harvilla for their many kindnesses during Mr. Harvilla's illness.

Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, September 4th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 5th, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.
