Joseph J. Gallo

AGE: 87 • Hockessin

Passed away peacefully on July 9, 2014. Born in Hazleton, PA, Joe was the son of the late Andrew and Julia Gallo. He proudly served his country in World War II, among the first to liberate the Dachau camp. Upon returning, he graduated from Hazleton High School and moved to Delaware, working for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

He was lovingly known as "My Mailman" by many Newark residents. He was a Phillies fan, and loved crab cakes. His wife, Lucille A. (Payne) Gallo, predeceased him in 1988. After her passing he became an active member of Post Cana, enjoying dancing, Bingo Bango, giving away "Stuffies", and sharing a joke with anyone he met.

He is survived by a son, Michael J. Gallo and his wife Suzanne, of Hockessin, daughter Carmeline Gallo of Clearwater, Florida, granddaughters Julia and Chloe; his companion of 26 years, Lee Richards and his caregiver, Susan Scanlon.

Funeral services for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday at 2pm at the All Saints Cemetery Chapel 6001 Kirkwood Highway Wilmington, DE 19808. (302) 625-5913
