Joseph L. Ruggiero, Sr.

AGE: 87 • Wilmington

Joseph L. Ruggiero, Sr., affectionately called "Poppy", age 87, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Ruggiero served our country during World War II and was stationed in Italy where he was a member of the 88th Infantry Division "Blue Devils". He was employed as a clerk with the United States Postal Service and retired in 1983 after 36 years of dedicated service. Mr. Ruggiero was a long time member of St. Elizabeth's Parish. He was an avid bowler, and enjoyed time at his summer home at the beach, fishing and crabbing on his pontoon boat.

He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Anna (Luke) Ruggiero; his brothers, Louis and William Ruggiero; his son, Thomas F. Ruggiero; and his granddaughter, Chelsea Ruggiero.

Mr. Ruggiero is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Lou (Ackerman) Ruggiero; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph L. Ruggiero, Jr. and Tina; his daughter-in-law, Christine Ruggiero; his three grandchildren, Luke Ruggiero, Amanda Schauer (Patrick) and Christopher Ruggiero; and the light of his life, "the little guy", great grandson, Logan.

Family and friends are invited to visit at St. Elizabeth's Church, Cedar and S. Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Monday, April 28 from 10:00-11:15AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30AM. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth's Athletic Association, 1500 Cedar St., Wilm., DE 19805 or Claymore Active Adult Center, 504 S. Clayton St., Wilm., DE 19805.
