Joseph P. Harton, age 93, of Wilmington, Delaware died November 15, 2013. Mr. Harton was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee where he was president of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. In WWII he was a lieutenant in the 5th Infantry Division of Patton's 3rd Army during its drive from Normandy to Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his reconnaissance of the Rhine River crossing site at Nierstein, Germany during this advance. Mr. Harton joined the DuPont Company at Old Hickory, Tennessee in 1947 and was transferred to the DuPont nylon plant in Seaford, Delaware in 1953. He led the Research and Development group that developed the commercial process for BCF nylon, which became widely used in carpeting. Mr. Harton retired from DuPont at Seaford in 1984 and moved to Wilmington, Delaware that same year.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jean Price Harton. He is survived by a daughter, Joanna Harton of Branford, Connecticut; a son, John Harton of Wilmington, Delaware; daughter-in-law, Nancy, and two grandchildren, Katherine and Andrew.
Graveside services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Seaford, Delaware at a date and time still to be decided. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810, and/or St. Luke's Memorial Fund, 202 N. North St., Seaford, DE 19973.
