Liam C. Barry, age 91, formerly of Newark, DE, passed away in Milford, DE on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
Liam was born in Cork City, Ireland on June 15, 1922, the son of the late John and Elizabeth (O'Mahoney) Barry. Liam immigrated to Ellis Island with his mother, two sisters and other family members in 1929 to join his father in New York City. In his late teens, Liam and family moved to Dunkirk, NY where he attended St. Mary's High School, excelling in football and track. Upon graduation, Liam enlisted in the US Army and fought in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. At the conclusion of his service, he married Gertrude Eagan in 1946 and spent many years in Dunkirk, NY before moving to Newark, DE, where Liam worked for the University of Delaware for 24 years.
In his free time, Liam enjoyed watching football, playing softball and pinochle, bowling and gardening.
Liam is survived by his children: sons, William C. (Rebecca), Richard G. (Debbie Mooney), Patrick K. (Kathy) and George T.; daughters, Kathleen M. Hill (Harry), Margaret A. Lynch (John), Eileen M. Price (Robert) and Elizabeth A. Boles (Jeff); his grandchildren: Chip (Melanie), Wendy, Nathan (Kerry), Rebecca, Cassandra, Shawn (Suzie), Michael (Kim), Christopher, Gina, Rob (Dina), Bryan (Ryann), Stacey (Mike) and Nora; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Liam, Mackenzie, Jackson, Ethan, Quinn, Laura, Zach, Samantha, Zen, Kaden, Jagger, Connor, Evan, Leah and Logan; his brother, John Barry (Patricia) and many nieces, nephews and extended members of the family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend, Gertrude (Eagan) Barry; son, John; granddaughter, Stephanie Barry; and his sisters and their husbands, Maura Henderson (Frederick) and Catherine O'Connell (Leo).
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, DE on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711 on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 11:00AM. Interment will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
