1932 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Norman Jay Shuman

Founder of Belfint

Norman J. Shuman, a resident of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away on October 2, 2013, at the age 81, surrounded by his family. Norm was born on April 22, 1932 in Baltimore, MD. He was laid to rest in Boca Raton, Florida.

Norm graduated from Baltimore City College for high school and then went on to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1954. Later, he attended the University of Baltimore Law School and New York University Extension Institute. He received his CPA certificate from the state of Maryland in 1957 and from Delaware in 1960. He joined BLS in 1958 as a senior accountant, when the firm totaled six employees. Today, there are 65 employees at BLS, which makes it one of the largest CPA firms in the state of Delaware.

Norm became a partner of the firm in 1968 and Managing Partner in 1972. He remained Managing Partner of the firm until 1978 when the partnership incorporated and he became the Managing Director and President. He held those positions until 1993. He retired from the firm in 2000.

During his career as a CPA, Norm was actively involved in leadership positions in the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and served as a board member of the International Group of Accounting firms (now PrimeGlobal).

He was an icon of the accounting profession in Delaware…one of the last few titans in the local accounting industry. The firm in which Norm worked and later lead, came into existence in 1923, when Charles I. Belfint formed the practice that preceded the current BLS. Through Norm's tutelage and leadership, BLS has grown into one of the largest and most highly respected firms in Delaware.

Norm served in the Air Force and was stationed at the Air Base in New Castle, Delaware. His military service is what brought him to Delaware, where he then put down professional and family roots. Norm actively participated in a wide range of philanthropic endeavors as a contributor, a worker or as an officer and director. He encouraged his staff to become involved in the community activities best suited to them. He believed it was his responsibility to support these groups personally and professionally. "If you give back to the community of your time and talents, the community will give back to you. It is our responsibility to give to the community".

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Susanne; his brother, Mack Shuman (wife, Dorothy); his daughters, Ellen Robinson (husband, Neil) and Julie Shuman; his stepchildren, Richard Pepperman (wife, Elizabeth), Jennifer Pepperman (husband, George Shea) and Victoria Pepperman; and 8 grandchildren, Brian, Jill, Thomas, Kate, Natalie, Grace, Christopher and Abigail.

The family suggests contributions be made to the at 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720 or Hospice by the Sea at 1531 W. Palmetto Park, Boca Raton, FL 33486.
