Bender, Sr.

Raymond D Bender Sr., age 81, of Milton Delaware formerly of Edgewood MD died peacefully Saturday morning, November 2, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Ray was the son of the late Anna Deetz of Philadelphia, PA. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War retiring after 22 years of service as a Master Sergeant. Ray then worked for 20 years as head of Radiology Maintenance at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also enjoyed volunteering at Beebe Medical Center and Delaware Hospice for the last four years where he made many new friends. Ray whole-heartedly enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts and was surprised in August by all his nieces, nephews and their families at his home to honor a loving father, grandfather and uncle. He will be sadly missed by all.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Emma C Bender; a sister, Anita DiNoia and a brother, Roland Deetz. He is survived by his children, R. Dale Bender Jr. of Abington MD, Linda Bender Huss of Georgetown DE and Richard C. Bender and his wife of Elkton MD; 3 grandchildren, Joshua B. Huss of Dewey Beach DE, Raven D. Bender of Edgewood MD and Ashley Huss of Georgetown DE and 3 great granddaughters, Kayla Strohmeyer of PA, Emma Doucette and Hunter Givens of Georgetown DE.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966. A private graveside service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Ray's name to the Veterans of Foreign War by visiting www.vfw.org, the by visiting www.diabetes.org or to Delaware Hospice by visiting www.delawarehospice.org.
