Richard J. Cosgrove
The Guest Book is expired.
Of Newark DE, formerly of West Chester, PA, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012, peacefully at home at the age of 79 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in West Chester in 1933, Dick was the son of Miriam (Reidenbach) and Paul J. Cosgrove, Sr., both deceased. He was a graduate of St Agnes High School in West Chester and served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked as a carpenter in the family business for many years and eventually retired from the Chester County Hospital in 1998.
Dick was a devoted family man and was especially proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed their activities and accomplishments. He loved to feed the birds and watch the antics of the local wildlife in his backyard. He shamelessly spoiled the family dog, Skittles. He regularly attended the Looking Good Men's Luncheon at Ruffini's with his brothers-in-law and was a loyal fan of the Philadelphia sports teams. He was always ready with a corny joke to make a friend or stranger smile and enjoyed making people laugh.
Dick was a devout Catholic and devoted much of his life to religious service. He was most recently a member of St John the Beloved Parish in Wilmington, DE where he participated in the Faith, Hope and Love Prayer Group. He was a Eucharistic Minister and served at the Christiana Hospital in addition to his previous home parish, St Mary of the Assumption. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Coffee Run Council #6768 and participated in the Men of Malvern retreats.
Richard was the beloved husband of the late Frances (Mascherino) Cosgrove; loving father of Robin C. Stanzione (John), Richard J. Cosgrove, Jr. (Lisa), Renee C. Taschner (Jeffrey) and Regina C. Toy (James); dear grandfather of Nicholas, Paul, Tyler, Emma, Laura and Theresa. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Ann Cosgrove, brothers, Paul, John, and William Cosgrove and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Eugene. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their amazing support.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 9:00 AM-10:00 AM Monday, December 31, 2012 and to his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Agnes Church, 233 West Gay Street, West Chester, PA. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Men of Malvern at www.malvernretreat.com or to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713.
