Mr. Thomas K. Atwood, age 81, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Atwood was born in Whitehead, NC, on November 19, 1931, son of the late Jennie and Gilbert Atwood. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. In civilian life, he made his career as a professional truck driver, working for NKS Distributors until his retirement. He was a member of Teamsters Local #326 and served as shop steward for many years.
Active in his community, Mr. Atwood was a Life Member of the Loyal Order of Moose New Castle Lodge #1578 and held the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. He also served as a lodge administrator for 21 years. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed cooking, traveling, camping, and cheering for his favorite team, the Phillies. He was also a longtime NASCAR fan. Most of all, Mr. Atwood delighted in spending time with his beloved family; he was always at his happiest during large and joyous family gatherings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth J. "Betty" Anton Atwood, in 2000. He is survived by his children, David A. Atwood (Ruby) of North Wilkesboro, NC, Denise A. Atwood of Winston-Salem, NC, Terry L. Austin (Charles) of New Castle, Patricia A. McClain (Don) of New Castle, Wendy J. Vaneiken (Jeff) of Elkton, MD, Tammy D. Furtaw of Clayton, and Connie M. Pendergast (Tal) of Wilmington; his longtime companion, Barb J. Stepp of Wilmington; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, July 10th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 11th, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Delaware Hospice and to the many friends who assisted both the family and Mr. Atwood during his illness. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
