Lived since 2001 in Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, DE, where he died of a pulmonary embolism on June 26, 2013. He was born Jan. 31, 1924, on a dairy farm in Collinsville, CT, to W. Bradley Thompson and Margaret Neill Thompson.
Graduated in 1942 from The Loomis School (now Loomis-Chaffee) in Windsor, CT. Matriculated at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in June 1942. Joined the Army in 1943 and served in Europe. After WWII he returned to Williams and graduated as a member of the Class of 1946. He earned a master's degree in chemical engineering at Worchester Polytechnic Institute, Worchester, MA.
Married Katharine "Kitsy" Van Buskirk Foster of Philadelphia on Sept. 9, 1949. He was hired by the Dupont Company on July 5, 1950, starting in plastics and ending his career in central research when he retired in 1985. Among many civic activities, he served on the vestry of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wilmington, as president of the board of St. Michael's Nursery in Wilmington, and as governor of the Delaware chapter of the Mayflower Society.
He and Kitsy had three sons, W. Bradley Thompson of McMinnville, OR; Lansford F. Thompson (deceased); and Neill M. Thompson of Phoenix, AZ. Other survivors include three granddaughters and two nieces. He was preceded in death by wife Katharine.
